Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP):

This is the future of telephony. Calls are routed across networks and the internet instead of dedicated voice lines.

IP telephony

Unless you are being really pedantic this means the same as VOIP.

Hunt Group

A group of phones that ring together when someone dials in.

ISDN

The commonest way to connect your telephone system to the public telephone network.

SIP

An important standard for telephone calls across the internet.

Trunking - using SIP to connect your telephone system to the outside world instead of ISDN.

PBX

Another word for telephone system

Analogue handset

A plain traditional handset.

Digital handset

A handset that connects to the phone system across dedicated wires rather than an IP network. More features than analogue, for example: self labelling function buttons.

IP handset

A handset that connects to the telephone system across your IP network. All sorts of features are possible.

Auto-attendant

A voice menu system
